Winery Notes: This block of Syrah is typically blended with the our two other blocks at John Sebastiano to make up the "regular" Holus Bolus Syrah. This is the fourth vintage of bottling Franc De Pied. These own-rooted vines always grow smaller, produce a smaller clusters and make what we feel is one of the most unique wines in our cellar. Planted on own-rooted Alban clone of Syrah. With aromas that are reminiscent of black olives, rosemary and smoke.
About Holus Bolus: The wines at HolusBolus are made by the husband and wife team of Peter Hunken and Amy Christine MW. Since 2003 they have made the wines at their winery in the "Lompoc Wine Ghetto" in northern Santa Barbara County, California. The first vintage of HolusBolus was in 2003 followed shortly thereafter in 2005 with the first release of Hocus Pocus Syrah and Genuine Risk. In addition to farming their own vineyard, they work with growers who are focused on producing high quality, organically grown grapes from unique sites in the county.
Peter has been making wine in Lompoc since 2001, learning the craft while working at Stolpman Vineyards as assistant winemaker and co-founder of Piedrasassi until 2008. Since then he has devoted all of his efforts to developing the HolusBolus and The Joy Fantastic wines.
Amy met Peter in 2004 in Lompoc and the following year they began making wine together under the company name of Black Sheep Finds (which persists today on our back label!). In 2013 Amy achieved the title of Master of Wine, becoming one of only thirteen women in the United States to achieve this remarkable goal. She also works for Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, selling their wines in southern California.
