The most popular red wine in Austria, Zweigelt is to Austria perhaps what Beaujolais is to France--an all-purpose workhorse that is as at home with a roasted chicken as it is with a hamburger. Hofer has been supplying us with our crisp dry white liters of Grüner Veltliner (another Austrian specialty we rarely see grown in the New World) for a few vintages, so we know this liter bottle had a good chance at dependability. It possesses a cool-weather character, lean and high-toned, with freshness to spare. A zippy red that can take a chill for summer picnics, or served as a contrast in informal winter meals.
The Hofer family farms vineyards in the village of Auersthal, located in Austria's wine region, Weinviertel, just beyond Vienna’s northern suburbs. The gently rolling hills where the vineyards are located are made up of deep loess soils, planted mainly to grüner veltliner, in addition to some zweigelt and riesling. The Hofers grow organic grains; rye, barley, and alfalfa, which are raised for consumption, and used as cover-crops in their vineyards. It is rare in this wine region of Weinvertel to find such high quality wines farmed with such meticulous attention and respect for the land. H&M Hofer is a certified organic producer.
